Heart's life is a mystery she can't solve...

One day, a poor man named Simon Pratt finds Heart sleeping in the tall river-grass.

She is wrapped in a beautiful blanket; it is embroidered with silver thread. Simon sells the blanket, but he keeps the child.

Simon calls her Girl.
A woman named Ruth Oakes gives her a real name...

Heart Avamir.

In ancient times, there were no lords. There were no stone-walled castles.
There were no borders between the lands.

The sun shone and the rain fell. Villagers tended  gardens. They plowed their fields. Some gathered thatch for roofs. Others made shirts or shoes or forged tools.

Life wasn't  easy.
But it was honest.
Hard work meant having enough to eat, a sturdy house, time for music and laughter.

And once in a while, in the forests, a unicorn was seen.  Magical creatures lived near people in the long ago times.
They were not afraid
